Warmer weather is on its way, which means that now is the time to start thinking about your summer travel plans. A visit to a BC fishing resort is the ultimate vacation for fishing enthusiasts, new anglers, families, couples, and more.

Whether you’re dreaming of casting a line in search of Pacific salmon or simply want to enjoy a few relaxing days enjoying the pristine wilderness of British Columbia, there’s no better place to do so than at a fishing resort.

Ready to start planning your own summer 2022 adventure? Keep reading to learn a few tips for planning the perfect BC fishing resort adventure.

Choose the Right Time to Visit

When you choose to book your BC fishing resort adventure can have a big impact on your trip. While there are no bad times to visit, some months may be better suited to your unique preferences than others.

During the winter months, ice on waterways, snow, and freezing temperatures make it difficult to travel to and from, and within, the region. Many of the tourist attractions and amenities, including the fishing resorts, close this time of year.

The prime BC fishing season—and when resorts are open to guests—runs from mid-May to early September each year in British Columbia. The most popular times to visit tend to be the middle of summer, from mid-June to late July, largely because this is when most people opt to take their summer vacation. These months are often the warmest, and offer the longest days, with plenty of sunshine.

However, the “shoulder” seasons have plenty to offer as well. From late-May to mid-June, temperatures still often reach into the 70s (Fahrenheit). While nights may be chilly, there’s nothing better than warming up around a campfire or relaxing in the hot tub this time of year.

August continues to offer hot days and cool nights, as well as the famous rolling fog on the water that the region is known for. August is often named as the favorite time of year among locals. Days are warm and nights are chilly, and the leaves begin to change, bringing the landscape to life in brilliant color.

Consider How You’d Like to Get There

Another big decision you’ll need to make when planning your BC fishing adventure is how you’ll get there. Guests have a few options to choose from. Those road tripping from home will need to drive to Vancouver Island, with a short ride on a British Columbia car ferry. From there, you can catch a boat ride to Sointula from Port McNeil.

Prefer to fly? Many guests opt to fly to Seattle or Vancouver, then drive to Vancouver Island to catch a ride at Port McNeil. But if you want to start your adventure before you ever arrive at the resort, opt for a seaplane ride instead. For this, you’ll book a commercial flight to either Seattle or Vancouver. From there, you’ll book a chartered float plane ride straight to Sointula. Those flying into Seattle can also choose to book a scheduled flight from Northwest Seaplanes instead.

While this method of arrival will cost a bit more, it’s truly an incredible experience. You’ll have a chance to see the region’s stunning landscapes and clear waters from above. It’s also the fastest way to get to and from the island. Keep in mind that if you choose to arrive via float plane, additional baggage restrictions will apply.

Book Your BC Fishing Resort Stay Early

More than 200 million Americans are expected to take a summer vacation in 2022. That’s not to mention the many millions of Canadian travelers and other international travelers from around the world that will be looking to book trips.

What does this mean for your BC fishing adventure? Spots are likely to fill up fast at popular resorts, particularly during the middle of the summer and around any summer holidays.

Booking your vacation early can help you guarantee your choice of dates, and give you time to make other travel plans, like your flights.

Check Your Passport

If you’ll be visiting British Columbia from the U.S., or from anywhere besides Canada, you’ll need a passport to get there. For Americans, processing times for passports has been taking longer than it used to since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. It could take as long as 11 weeks for routine processing for new passports and passport renewals. While expedited processing is available, it often isn’t guaranteed, and could still take up to 7 weeks.

The last thing you want to do is get to the date of your trip only to find that you can’t travel because your passport is expired and you forgot to apply for a new one or it didn’t arrive in time. Check your passport right away, and apply early if you’ll need a new one before your trip.

Don’t Forget Your British Columbia Fishing License

In addition to your passport, you’ll also need a valid Canadian fishing license if you’re planning to cast a line while at your BC fishing resort. You can purchase a 5-day BC Tidal Fishing License online ahead of your trip.

Visit the Fisheries and Oceans Canada webpage to start your purchase. Once there, select “Pacific” for your preferred fishing region. Select a 5-day license, and fill in the dates of your trip. You’ll also need to add a salmon stamp to your license. Complete your purchase and print out your license to bring with you.
